Directors Commentary - Question 1

  1. An excellent response to question 1. Well done for including influencing film clips.

    1) When discussing the ident, you could look at how it follows the conventions of opening sequences in general (regardless of genre). You could talk about your titles here too.
    2) Remember to discuss how your research into thriller films helped you establish the conventions before you started planning.

  2. (RE-DRAFT)

In regards to the film studio's ident, I found that many studios feature around a 10 - 15 second clip as an ident, including Warner Brothers, New Line Cinemas and Icon and they all produce various different films in terms of genre where as our one was only 5 seconds long, this was mainly due to time restraints and our original ident was far longer, having a total length of 15 seconds however it dragged on a little too much and thus you can see that through the 5 second clip. We featured a sky in ours, much alike Lionsgate as you can see in the commentary above and we thought it was effective as it did not specify itself using that ident to a certain genre unlike Twisted Pictures whom produced the Saw series of films in the horror genre.

Our titles that we made using LiveType and we found a website online (www.dafont.com) that allowed us to download fonts to use as our titles. Navigating through the horror themed fonts we found many fonts that although were cheesy, could potentially work named Angel (http://www.dafont.com/angel.font) and this was effective in our titles with the red as it gave an 'edgy' feel to the titles and along with the motion that I added in using LiveType worked to keep action in the opening as opposed to keeping the frames still with the text just staying in one location. In terms of conventions this is where my planning and research helped me prior to creating these titles because using the research on existing thrillers and even horrors such as Eden Lake (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyfDIIDbznA) you can see that the font is a similar size and style, furthermore the red works well in conjunction with the over-saturated images (although doesn't apply to my black and white opening, it shows that the colour red is bold in most scenarios and when the black screen appears the red is further emphasized, similar to my opening).

The planning and research stages prior to the construction of the opening helped me to establish what conventions were appropriate to the thriller genre and where to challenge them and this can be seen in my G321 research section and I looked at Eden Lake, Donnie Darko, No Country for Old Men and others to view their use of conventions and to most I have conformed, for example our character was based on Donnie Darko (as expressed above) and this helped me establish a ground point for the conventions of the 'son' character. We also conformed when it came to using our mise-en-scene shooting location as little thrillers have used a farm location previously and this is mentioned in the commentary however I found this through my research and planning stages.
